The water lily became my symbol, something that blooms gently on the surface, even when the waters below are murky. I was inspired by the idea that light can reach us in unexpected ways, even when we feel submerged. It reminded me that beauty and clarity can coexist with messiness, and that the softness within us is not weakness, but wisdom.
I hope that when people see “A Ray of Light,” they feel a sense of calm, a gentle reassurance that no matter what is happening around them, something within remains whole and steady. I want it to feel like a deep breath: a moment of pause, peace, and reconnection. Life may not always be clear or predictable, but growth is always possible. The lily invites viewers to remember their own light that they too can bloom above the noise, with grace and quiet power.
I chose acrylic for this piece because of its flexibility and layered texture. It allowed me to create both the softness of the lily and the emotional depth in the background, which represents life’s complexity. The water lily felt like the perfect subject: it’s both delicate and resilient, growing not in perfection, but in muddy, unseen places. I leaned into a semi-abstract style for the background to contrast the flower’s purity to show that even when life feels messy or unclear, beauty can rise to the surface. Together, they tell a quiet but powerful story of hope, presence, and quiet transformation.
